I've been screaming a much less eloquent version of this to my many Jewish friends (who mostly agree), as well as at the exterior of Chuck Schumer's apartment building about a mile from my house.

I want to suggest one action to the mainstream American Jewish community. Take down the Israeli flag from your temples. It no longer represents American Jews, if it ever did. It represents a murderous apartheid state, and it's time for us to distinguish ourselves from it.

The wealthy temple in Park Slope still displays the Israeli flag. (See https://synagogues-360.anumuseum.org.il/gallery/congregation-beth-elohim/) Rabbi Rachel Timoner, who I hope regrets the stealthy "stand by Israel" op-ed she wrote for the NYTimes in the wake of October 7 (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/17/opinion/israelis-palestinians-torah-humanity.html) now has an opportunity to show that she has reconsidered and that, as Peter put it, she believes in God. (https://peterbeinart.substack.com/p/do-our-rabbis-believe-in-god).

Take down the flag, Rabbi Timoner. For once, be a leader ahead of the curve.

Antisemitism in the diaspora is the raison d’être of ethno-nationalist Zionism. The rift between the actions of Israel and the well-being of Jewish life elsewhere is deepening. Thanks Peter.

This is a very real concern, to put it mildly. I remember during the Iraq war reading a commentary by a rabbi who said how concerned he was that American Jews might be blamed for causing that war. The neocons in the White House were mostly Jewish and powerfully motivated by their desire to "protect" Israel and saw the Iraq war as a stepping stone to other wars in the region, designed to reshape it to fit their vision of what was needed to make Israel safe. But the neocons, as influential as they were, were only one faction in the WH that wanted war with Iraq. In that case, the Jewish community largely managed to avoid being blamed for the disaster that followed. In this case, the connection between Israel and what is happening to Iran is obvious. Netanyahu has come right out and said it. Even if not many American lives are lost in this illegal war, the cost will be astronomical at a time when more and more Americans are more and more economically desperate. Mainstream American Jewish organizations have lined up behind Israel, just as they lined up behind its horrific attack on Gaza. Michelle Goldberg's column from a week ago pointed out how low support for Israel is among Democrats and quoted a woman who realized that every politician she hates supports Israel. Goldberg also pointed out the relationship between Jewish organizations and the people deliberately destroying American democracy. All of this creates more animosity towards the Jewish community.

Israel Goldstein's avatar

You do mean the same Iraq war where the Jews were told to stand-by and accept the incoming Scud missles and deaths so as not the ruffle American feathers during the war? Where were you, Peter and other as these missles raining down on Tel Aviv? I don't remember anyone of you posting, publishing or voicing your concerns or objections...perhaps even then, you were more interested in your integration or assimilation here.

Shaun Narine's avatar

Israel was told to stay out of the war by the US, which knew that Israel's involvement would shatter the Arab coalition that Bush had been able to assemble to eject Iraq from Kuwait. Iraq deliberately attacked Israel in the hopes of drawing it into an attack and breaking that coalition, but his tactic did not work. Israel's decision to stay out was in its own interest as it knew that the US would destroy Iraq and end another one of its regional rivals. Israel's policies over the last few decades have been driven by two major and related concerns: destroying regional rivals so it can be the hegemonic power and holding onto/expanding its theft of Palestinian (and other Arab) land.

Israel Goldstein's avatar

Destroying its regional rivals who were had set out to destroy Israel? Oh, to your mind, Hamas, OIJ, Hizbollah, Iran & proxies were all peace loving groups with zero intent to murder Jews and exterminate Israel?

CV's avatar

Hamas OIJ Hezbollah Iran are not peace loving groups. Saying that their intent is to "murder Jews and exterminate Israel" is a strawman through. They explicitely say they don't want to "murder Jews". They do say they'd like Israel to disappear, but I don't get how it's that very worse than Israel acting to make Palestine disappear, including by actively making the life of Palestinians as unlivable as possible, and not caring a whit if they die massively as a consequence.

Your post is very revealing : it shows, once again, that it's not possible to make the case to support Israel's policies without a very high does of moral relativism : it requires to consider that the same act, done by Israel, is A-ok-nothing-to-see-there, and downright outrageous-how-dare-you-you-barbarians if done by Israel's adversaries. In my morals the same act is either ok or not and it does not depend on who does it to whom.

Israel Goldstein's avatar

Please do some reading. PA pronouncements in Arabic ( not for western ears) as well as continuing " pay to slay" policy; as well as all the aforementioneds published policies snd actions belie your opinion. Had there been no cold blooded murders of Jews, there would be no Separation Barriers or Check Points. Action=Teaction;. Law of Physics & Universe.

CV's avatar

As I said : Israelis do it too, calling to slaughter gaza live on tv in hebrew, so either it's wrong on both side or it's not wrong.

PETER!!!! This video does the exact same thing — center ‘what is good for the Jews’ over ‘what is good’ or ‘what is good for all people in the US.’

Of course, cloistered oligarchic leaders of legacy Jewish communal organizations have been played by Israeli warhawks (does Netanyahu REALLY have that much power over his country’s foreign policy?). Their unwavering obeisance puts US Jews at even greater risk as targets for resentment and is reckless on that basis. If their remit is to protect Jewish people, they are terrible at their jobs.

But if the public or private conversation remains “is this good for the Jews?” and you simply come to a different conclusion, how is that NOT giving primacy to our Jewish identity, vs our national identity or human morality?

We have spent 80 + years locked in Hillel line one. After 25 months of accelerated genocide, a full year of US repression (yesterday was one year since Mahmoud Khalil was abducted, mass detention and deportation is the norm, and Leqaa Kordia is still a political prisoner), and hundreds of deaths into the latest joint Israeli/US military campaign, can we move to line two? Please? What are we if we don’t? If not now, when?

I think this argument needs to be made without using the word "antisemitism." It's a word that has been so misused that it has either lost all meaning or can be used to mean anything. I'm immediately suspicious when I hear the word. If you want to talk about anti-Jewish hate, make that clear. If you want to talk about how this war effects the American people, say so without using muddying it up with "antisemitism."

Deborah Sagner's avatar

Isn't this exactly what the american jewish oligarchy want? I think they understand exactly what they're doing.

Alice Leibowitz's avatar

You think they want American Jews to be harmed? I suppose it's plausible; they rely on antiemitism to justify their existence and their most horrible policies.

CV's avatar

They may not explicitely want it, but it's possible they genuinely don't care and will live very comfortably with rising antisemitism as a consequence of their choices and actions, rationalising it as "a price worth paying" or some such.

Alice Leibowitz's avatar

Yes, I think that's what Peter is arguing. What Deborah is arguing takes the assertion quite a bit further. I certainly hadn't thought so, but based on how pleased many high-ranking Israeli officials seem about the Bondi Beach Massacre, she might not be wrong.

Burt Siegel's avatar

I don't always agree with Beinart but he has said what I feel intensely and have said myself. And if you read the the polls you will see that over 60% of American Jews support this mashuginah war. God for bid it escalates and there are major casualties or even worse a terrorist attack in the US !!!!!!!

Adam G's avatar

The poll I believe you are referring to, from JPPI, is decidely inexact and almost certainly overstates Jewish support for the war, as the population it surveyed is far more conservative than American Jewry as a whole.

"The survey of 692 American Jews drew from a panel maintained by JPPI that aims to reflect the denominational distribution of U.S. Jews. The institute says its polls reflect the sentiments of 'connected' Jews because its panel includes fewer intermarried Jews, more Jews who are affiliated with denominations and more Jews who have lived in Israel than demographic data would suggest is representative of U.S Jewry overall."

https://jweekly.com/2026/03/09/68-of-american-jews-support-the-us-israel-war-against-iran-survey-finds/

Burt Siegel's avatar

Thank you for that clarification. Obviously the sample in surveys matters in what the "results" indicate. But as someone who is very involved in organized Jewry I must say the support for the military action by the US is quite high, especially for those over 40. I informally interviewed a group of about a dozen people; all Democrats and over 1/2 looked upon it favorably. Several were unhappy with the wide spread opposition within the Democratic party. And I believe that what Beinart stated is very much valid. You may recall that Jews were blamed by many for the war in Iraq in which Israel had no involvement

Adam G's avatar

I agree with Peter's piece, and I'm also disappointed (but not surprised) that many American Jews support the war. I do think things are shifting, though, and that poll was intended to make the support appear stronger than it is.

One would have to be a totally naiive person to believe that the Mullahs of Iran don't mean when they proclaim that the Zionist Entity must be eradicated. Eyes and minds are closed that the Mullas have 60% enriched uranium; the same uraniums sole purpose is a nuclear bomb. Of course the same people close their eyes to the Mullahs fingerprints all over the Argentine Jewish Community massacre, firebombings, ramming attacks in Europe and Australia's eviction of the Iranian ambassador for underwriting Jew hatred....all amongst others.

Surely the Mullahs have no desire to kill Jews, right?

Ted Pourzal's avatar

We can now add a third demographic to Israel-first Jews and evangelical Zionists: It's the Iranian loony opposition by the 10s of thousands now waving Israeli flags as they celebrate Trump's destruction of Iran with flashy crowd singing/dancing in the streets from Toronto and Boston to NYC, DC and LA, taking flowers to US consulates abroad, publishing condolences for the US troop deaths, etc.

Logically Peter's warning that American Jewish establishment can be endangering the Jewish community by cozying up to Trump should apply to this ecstatic so called pro-democracy element amongst us.

Ted Pourzal's avatar

Peter, what a combination of conscience, foresight, audacity and astuteness you are time and again. The public is rarely treated to commentary that consistently packs all four. Words are never enough to thank you.

peter2's avatar

Peter, you say that "real antisemitism is already rising", and you clarify that "I’m not talking about the bullshit claims of antisemitism that say that people are antisemitic because they ask whether it might be better off if Israel were a country that treated everyone equally under the law, rather than based on Jewish supremacy. No. I mean, Nick Fuentes, Candace Owen, quoting the Talmud, spinning conspiracy theories about Jewish holocausts of Christians, all of this kind of stuff. This is really rising, right?"

You need to be more specific, and not just say that "real antisemitism" is what comes out of the mouths of that guy and that gal.

"Quoting the Talmud": that's something you've done yourself on this website, and is obviously not inherently antisemitic.

"Spinning conspiracy theories about Jewish holocausts of Christians": if you interpret Fuentes and Owens as doing that, then you should quote exactly what they've said, in the context in which they said it. This is something that your subscribers are interested in hearing about.

"All of this kind of stuff": that just tells us how you feel, and is not otherwise informative.

Do you really prefer that your readers just take your word for it? You have not included anything from Fuentes or Owens under "Cited in Today's Video."

I've always thought the war is long overdue, for the US, but whoever finally starts it will be condemned, thus one president after another kept kicking the can down the road. apparently, George W Bush was advised to do it in the very beginning of his presidency and decided not to. As for Israel - it has the full right to do it on its own, and could have done it alone if the US supplied the munitions. Maybe that's how it should have been done

dvorah's avatar

why would our allegiance belong to any nation state? doesn't our allegiance and care go to life itself at a time when everything we love is at stake?

DINNYC's avatar

I'm surprised that many American who present themselves as otherweise liberal reflexively support Israel. This is particularly the case with the joint U.S. - Israel war with Iran where the might right makes right approach and illegality correlate to the Trump's adminstration's disregard of rule of law and democratic norms domestically. This isn't principled, nor, I think, in the longer interest of Americans who want a democratic and pluralistic country.

CV's avatar

This has long been the real anomaly of the world 1990+ geopolitics. Oslo's failure and the explosion of the colonization *should* have put the final nail in the coffin of the american progressives' unconditional support of Israel. It did not, for several reasons :

- reflexive zionism of american progressive Jews who refused to let the facts challenge their cognitive dissonance and settled comfortably in a genuine "Progressive Except Palestine" position,

- lack of interest of regular non-zionist american democrats,

- incredible pro-Israel bias of the american democrat elite, including newspapers.

As a western european center-left citizen, I started to read the american press in the 00s. I remember feeling utterly astonished at the pro-Israel bias of the NYT when there was a bit more news about the conflict in 08-09 (war in gaza) and 14 (war in gaza). It was very different comparing to what the European press reported.

The American groupthink is stucked in the 90s. Or it was in 2023. Now it's in the process to rebalancing, because the gaza livestreamed butchery popped open the bubble.

Israel Goldstein's avatar

You are of course right....the European Press, specifically the BBC has been factually proven to be a hot-bed of anti-semitism & Jew hatred; the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, as well has had to re-write entire chapters that essentially erased Israel and Jews. Over the years, Europe's Left has moved to Jew hatred....likely by the pressure of growing Islamic influences. The US press, including the NY Times and various news stations have taken the mantra of Qatari sponsored and underwritten viewpoints. I will not soon forget, after Oct 7th, Jonathan Greenblatt was interviewed on MSNBC's Morning Joe program....he responded to an obiously slanted report by exclaiming, where do you get this stuff. He has not been on that program since. Israel is no better nor worse than any other country on the face of the earth, but the amount of press and opinions being published and voiced paint that country, that in its short life, has provided the world so much, as the devil incarnate.

The only thing I would correct is that AIPAC is not a Jewish organization. It started as one, but its leadership and donor base are now largely, if not majority, Christian.

peter2's avatar

You are correct that AIPAC in its public communications does not identify itself as a "Jewish" organization, the way that J Street and Jewish Voice for Peace do. But AIPAC is a member organization of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. https://conferenceofpresidents.org/member-organizations/

You say that "its leadership and donor base are now largely, if not majority, Christian." The names of AIPAC's board members and officers are listed here: https://israelpalestinenews.org/the-faces-of-aipac/

Are these the people that you're saying are largely, if not majority, Christian?

And what is your source for AIPAC's "donor base" being "largely, if not majority, Christian"? There are also two ways that that statement can be interpreted: one is that the majority of individual donors are Christian, and the other is that the majority of funds come from Christian donors; which do you mean?

Alice Leibowitz's avatar

Not that antisemites would notice that nuance, especially given that the pro-Israel movements deliberately obscure it.

peter2's avatar

Tell David Frum:

https://x.com/davidfrum/status/2026429781294588277

In response to Ro Khanna's tweet to AIPAC asking "You guys still around?", frum wrote, "A question that has been repeatedly asked in dozens of now forgotten languages over the past 3,000 years." Not a statement that would make sense if Frum understood AIPAC as an organization that was founded in the decade before his birth and that is largely, if not majority, Christian.
