Thanks for writing this Peter. I am a big admirer of your thinking. For the longest time, I was concerned that my daughters would have to prove their "red white and blue" -ness as Muslims in this country. It is very satisfying to see being Muslim as being rather boringly normalized in the USA these days. Yes, I do live in NY but still, it is nice to see that dual vision is being accepted and also normalized now. You just said is better than I could. Thank you!
Thank you Ateeq. I really appreciate that. I do hope that maybe the worst of all the Sharia is unAmerican nonsense has passed--but worry that as China replaces ISIS/Al Qaeda as America's new enemy that Chinese and other Asian Americans may face their own version of this attack. With gratitude, Peter
Hi Mr. Beinart! Thank you for writing this, it speaks to our experiences so well. I am one of the daughters :) I will say, I have been able to find acceptance and community here in America, more than I did in India, weirdly enough. I am a student at Wellesley College, and we have a very large and wonderfully diverse Muslim students' organization, and an organization for South Asian students as well. I do think there is more acceptance for us now, but it's been a slow process. But whenever there is a discussion about 9/11 or terrorism, we are still expected to condemn it first. I do worry about the growing hate towards Chinese and Asian Americans too. Thank you for this pertinent post! :)
wonderful column. I have found South African Jews fascinating: a old friend. Lionel Sacks, who passed away years ago had been sent to a Catholic school when he was eight, then spent his life traveling the world with only the money his father sent him; also the wife of a nephew and her family -accomplished....then there is the issue of race....
This is, as expected, a great piece (you share with me a pronounced propensity for parenthetical thinking that some may find maddening, but I find clarifying).
When you completed this, had you read the TOI “featured blog post” by Avi Weiss in which he professed to be “in pain” for “having to” encourage voters to choose Loeffler (oMg!) over Warnock? His message is not an example of dual loyalty or protection of US Jews, it is nakedly ‘don’t support Warnock, he would be bad For Israel!’ This, when the ability of a Democratic President to govern the US hangs In the balance (quoting Hillel, no less!). That is a call for voters, Jewish and not Jewish, to put the perceived interests of Israel before domestic needs. That is a serious problem.

I know and like Avi. He has many wonderful qualities. But I found that oped terribly depressing
