On our Zoom call for subscribers this Friday, I had planned to interview Salem Barahmeh, executive director of the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy.
There seems to be an obvious parallel between those Islamists seeking a lost identity and some Trumpist voters who feel abandoned by what’s become the dominant culture, not to mention DC politicians. Older and traditional values being steamrolled, much of it media led. “Revolt against modernity” in Prof. Hofstadter’s phrase. It’s important to try to understand some of that 45%, not all of whom are hopeless maniacs.
I had a similar reaction. Though I’d still make a distinction between the CFs you mention and the average Joes out there who may not be as zealously malignant but feel equally left out.
